Jersey is suffering from shadow workforce practice

  • Категория: News

Due to upcoming Brexit Jersey has become less attractive for foreign workers, so more and more employers succumb to cash-in-hand working schemes. This particularly refers to the hospitality sector, but business and agriculture suffer as well. Notably, qualified chefs are in the biggest demand on the island.

To begin with, the decline of currency has made the work less attractive for the expats. Moreover, the number of working licenses granted to the foreigners has shrunk. All this leads to the shortage of the skilled staff. Hospitality and service industries witness the lowest number of approved licenses. It is getting difficult for the small business to operate in such conditions so the owners prefer to bypass social payments and avoid taxation.

The unpleasant trend has worried the authorities. Top-ranked officials of Jersey has held a number of sessions in order to discuss the way out of the labour crisis. So far, the solution is sought in the new working and population policy. The officials might reconsider immigrant checks and system of work permits. Without a sustainable growth of population and surplus of skilled employees, it is impossible to reach the sustainable economic growth in Jersey.
