Will Amsterdam’s red light district disappear?

  • Категория: News

A decade ago, Amsterdam’s authorities decided to transform the notorious red light district but there has been a small success so far. The project 1012 initiated by the current Labor party leader Lodewijk Asscher aimed to improve the economic image of the district by means of replacing coffee shops and brothels with galleries. A new report reveals information about all efforts and remaining problems.

The authorities tried to reduce criminal infrastructure and tackle human trafficking. For that purpose, they introduced a special project Emergo. As a result, nearly 50 coffee shops and twice as many brothels were shut down. Nevertheless, neither this nor additional checks on owners have eliminated the criminal activity and forced prostitution in the district.

However, the 1012 district has witnessed some economic improvements. The public area is more inviting now and the property prices are constantly rising. The audit office plans to buy other key infrastructure objects. The exact project funding is not disclosed but authorities assure that the initiative’s budget is still sufficient.

Despite the changes, the locals are far from happy. Minimarkets and bistros occurred instead of brothels, while the expected galleries and fancy restaurants are delaying. Higher prices caused a great deal of dissatisfaction from the small business owners.

To sum up, the ambitious plan had little success so far. The authorities hope for a stronger governmental, community support, and a new life for Emergo project. The audit office assumes progress will become more evident in case of dealing with small areas within the red light district rather than managing the complete 1012 area.
